Frequently asked questions

What are “closed building conditions?”

Following proper Time-Sensitive Testing Protocols are essential for getting an accurate result. Failure to achieve these conditions can invalidate a test. Client will be responsible for the cost of any retesting required. This means that for 12 hours before and during testing:

• Windows must be kept closed and sealed.

• Exterior doors should be kept closed aside from normal momentary entry and exit of the building.

• Heating and cooling must be set to normal temperatures (65º and 80º F).

• Makeup air and other outdoor air ventilation systems must be set to their lowest settings.

• Do not operate whole-house fans or fireplaces. Dampers must be closed.

• Range hoods, bathroom fans, and clothes dryer use must be kept to a minimum.

can i test for radon myself?

Yes, low-cost affordable kits are available from hardware stores and online, but it is recommended that a certified professional performs testing to ensure proper testing protocols are observed, and that the results are accurate.

WHO SHOULD TEST, and when?

It is recommended that every house be tested every 5 years, and every 2 years if a mitigation system is installed. Prospective home buyers should have that property tested as part of the real estate transaction process. It is also recommended that homeowners retest after large scale renovations.

I moved the monitor

The equipment can detect when it has been moved, and movement can invalidate the test. If it is clear that the client has moved the equipment to affect the outcome of the test, the test will be invalidated and the client will be responsible for the cost of any additional testing that is required. The equipment also can detect other tampering, such as covering the device or ventilating the testing space. If a client is responsible for invalidating a test, a new test will be required at the client’s expense.

I accidentally bumped the monitor

The equipment can detect when it has been moved or even jostled, and excessive movement can invalidate a test. Accidental movements are usually easily determined, and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Take care to keep small children and pets away from the equipment to ensure accurate measurements are obtained.

When will i get my results?

Results will be reported the same day the testing ends, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

My house measured lower than 2 pci/L

This is GOOD. This means your house is below the recommended action level set by the EPA.

My house measured between 2 and 4 pci/L

The EPA action level is set at 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). If your house tests between 2 pCi/L and 4 pCi/L, it is recommended that you consider fixing your home with a radon mitigation system.

My house measured greater than 4 pci/L

This means your house is ABOVE the EPA action level, and a second test is recommended. If both tests average above 4 pCi/L, the EPA recommends you should fix your home as soon as possible.
